Programme notes
This composition was originally composed for the American Duo Montagnard (saxophone and guitar) and a transcription for clarinet and guitar was later created. The composition consists of three movements that depict three short scenarios of which the central theme is the life of a witch – this theme was chosen due to the timbre possibilities and their metaphorical interpretations offered by the registers of and interaction between the instruments. The first movement is a depiction of witches that congregate, the second movement is a depiction of witches that dance as part of a mysterious ritual, and the third movement is a depiction of a member from the witch family that passed away and the others’ mourning.
Composer's statement
The high register of the clarinet is explored in this composition and the guitar is employed as a mysterious agent – both instruments are employed to perform in unconventional ways at some points. These unconventional performance techniques create various sound effects that contribute to the programmatic scenes depicted in the various movements.
